"The Dark Side” was a band from the
60’s that performed in East Dubuque Iowa and various area’s around Galena
Illinois and Dubuque Iowa. They recorded many early recordings that may or
may not still exist. The members of the band were always changing but they
had one thing that kept them all together, that was the
powerhouse drummer Vaughn Kray. Vaughn always made sure that the
band would fulfill every Union contract that was signed. Either by Vaughn
or David Chalmers who were both members of musicians local #42, As
time went on “The Dark Sides” became more and more popular. They could not
keep up with all the contracts that were offered them. One night
after hiring "Tony" on a Hammond B3 the group was Performing at Dubuque
Senior High… Some how that night "The Dark Sides” brought in what was
considered the first live fog machine in Rock and Roll History. It
consisted of gun powder, which started out as an awesome spectacular show
unfortunately the gun powder exploded and started to burn down the High
School GYM… during the fire Vaughn Kray was hauled away on a stretcher by
the local Fire Dept. after this episode David Chalmers and Vaughn Kray
were hired by another Local Rock Group “The Butterscotch Grove”. See web
Page for "The Butterscotch Grove".

accidentally started the girl's gym on fire with the home-made
incendiary devices and destroyed their equipment and ended up in the
hospital for hyperventilation. That's Ronnie Swartz (Von Swartz Light
Co.) on the light controller. Strangely enough Ronnie is a fireman in
Dubuque. (David Chalmers on Guitar)
